A large number of insurance policies were sold through in house advisors in solicitors firms and different rules apply to them. The Financial Ombudsman Service has jurisdiction for any sales that were made after 30 November 2001 however for any policies sold by solicitors prior to that date then the regulations of the three different law societies for England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland apply. An initial application for compensation should be made to the solicitors firm and if this application is refused then an application should be made to The Financial Ombudsman for insurance policies taken out after 30 November 2001. For policies taken out before this date an approach should be made to the relevant law society in the event of refusal by the solicitor however the law societies have limited powers to order compensation even when endowment policy complaints are valid.
